This project of designing the 31 Squadron Memorial was a great honour for our team to undertake. The memorial was a gift from the 31 Squadron Association and marked the 100th Anniversary since its formation .
The design features a cream-coloured granite star which represents the 31 Squadrons emblem and the gold star of India. On the front face of the star the squadrons insignia was engraved, along with the wide array of aircraft flown, represented by silhouettes, which were recessed and infilled black. On the rear of the star the squadron insignia, surrounded by those who received battle honours, were inscribed. The star sits on a dark green granite base which represents the dark green background to 31 Squadrons gold star emblem. The names of the 31 Squadron commanding officers and associated committee founding members are engraved in gold lettering to the front of the base, whilst the rear features a list of squadron bases.

Niell and team did a great job with plans and 3D graphics. As I struggle to visualise, the graphics allowed me to get a realistic image. Having Niell deal with the planning department takes away the stress and their knowledge and experience is invaluable. They were very patient as we couldn’t always make up our minds.
