Founded back in 1972, the company has developed a well-established, long lasting reputation for detailed design supported by a comprehensive understanding of building construction technologies. As a team, our experience combined provides a wealth of knowledge across a variety of sectors, stretching back for nearly 40 years.

Our philosophy is based on providing innovative but practical solutions to a Client’s brief, with a building of individual design and precise eye-catching detailing. We pride ourselves on producing high quality illustrative drawings, backed up with large scale detailing and fully supported by technical and performance specifications.
Based on the outskirts of Lincoln, our design portfolio features work both locally and nationally, having contributed to projects in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Gloucestershire, in both design, build and management contracts. The work we produce is consistently recognised for the detail, clarity and thought displayed, whether it be in our drawings, specification packages or other related design.
Over the years our Practice has been recognised by design awards for local and national housing schemes, commercial developments, and one-off projects.

Our History
The Practice was originally founded as Strait Design in 1972, changing to Stephen Roberts Associates in 1985.
The Practice began in 1972 when newly qualified Chartered Architect, Stephen Roberts established a new Architectural Practice, Strait Design, working from an office located on The Strait in uphill Lincoln. Stephen was Registered with the Architects Registration Board and also a Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects until retiring.
The Practice grew in both size and reputation and Stephen entered into a Partnership with Richard Costall. This resulted in a name change for the business to Costall Roberts Associates and a new office at 71 Carholme Road, Lincoln. After some very successful years, this Partnership dissipated and the Practice was renamed Stephen Roberts Associates.
